This episode of the Game Plan T1D podcast features T1D all-star, Ryan Reed. Ryan is a professional stock car racing driver and competes full-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series where he races the #16 Drive Down A1C Lilly Diabetes Ford Mustang for the Roush Fenway Racing team. Having begun his racing career at the age of 4, Ryan excelled in his early days as a driver winning several championships and a Rookie of the Year Award at age 17 in the Super Late Model Division. Then adversity struck as Ryan was diagnosed with T1D at age 19 in the middle of an accelerating racing career. Undaunted by doctors’ opinions that he would be forced to leave racing behind, Ryan charged on, working with his family and endocrinologists to get back on the track within 4 months. Since his diagnosis, Ryan has captured two victories in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. Ryan also founded his own non-profit, Ryan’s Mission which helps increase Diabetes awareness. 75 percent of NASCAR fans deal with Diabetes personally or through family and friends, Ryan’s Mission aims to help his fans and countless others living with Diabetes.
"Knowledge is so empowering, especially for people living with Diabetes. Just try to take control of the disease. There are a lot of days where you feel like you have control over your Diabetes and you feel like you know exactly what to do and nothing goes right, just try your best to take control of your Diabetes...It sounds so simple and cliche, but just don't give up."
